Split between two areas of specialisation:

  1. Working with Communities across the UK to improve tree cover through community planting and Urban Forestry.

  2. Working with Councils, Housing Associations and other clients to bring technology to help them improve their urban forestry programs.

The role will include growing the business with a focus on greening schools.

• Supporting local authority clients, NGOs and community groups across the UK to improve urban forestry programs.

• Organising and running community tree planting events and community engagement.

• Growing our new greener schools program - , including onsite at Woodland Dwelling, where we are currently building an outdoor classroom.

• Opportunity to manage our on-site nursery. The nursery is currently capable of growing around 3000 small standard trees (8-10s), primarily for the projects we deliver directly, as well as a growing number of clients.

• Helping manage our site, for example, keeping paths cut for school groups and guests. (Longer term, we have aspirations to manage our woodland for local charcoal production, and will be sourcing grant funding to support this).

• Look for opportunities to expand work with current clients and locally in Wales.

• Occasionally assisting with training of small groups.

• Attend conferences and events to showcase our capabilities. Secondary Responsibilities:

• Supporting our work with our partner PlanITGeo, demonstrating TreePlotter Inventory and TreePlotter Canopy projects, such as the one completed recently for Birmingham Council and Birmingham Trees People.

• Assisting with work on Urban Forestry Management Plans and providing strategic advice. This will involve engaging with clients, listening to their needs and identifying how our software and expertise can help them improve their urban forestry programs.

• As a business we are keen to help you grow; if there are areas of urban forestry or urban greening that you would like to explore and develop we would be keen to support you to do this. You will work alongside our directors and wider urban forestry team. You will be required to organise your workload. Your work will vary as projects tend to differ to meet the requirements of our different clientele.

Responsibilities

About You

• Previous experience either working with schools and community groups; as a Tree Officer or in the field of urban forestry would be a bonus.

• Degree (or equivalent) in either Urban Forestry, geography or another environmental discipline.

• An interest in the environment.

• A willingness to learn more about our software is a must. As TreePlotter is a GIS based platform and GIS will be utilised in the role, any previous GIS experience would be a bonus but not essential (even a module as part of your degree would help).

• Great people skills.

• It would be advantageous to have urban forestry experience but this is something that can be learnt on the job.

• Soft skills are really important to us as a business; as is a willingness to listen to our customers.

• There are aspects of field work within the role when we work with communities on consultations or out working with groups and schools planting trees. You must be willing to take part as we plant in all weathers.

• Comfortable presenting in person and/or online.

• The role is varied, and therefore you will need to be flexible and adaptable.

• A driving license and access to your own vehicle is essential as there is an element of travel, as a business we attend conferences and events to showcase our products and services, our community engagement work and tree planting can also require travel.

• Good written and spoken communication skills are essential, but again we can support you to improve this area if needed.

The Role

About Us

Woodland Dwelling is a small family consultancy based in Wales with remote home-based teams in Newport and Sheffield. We work with clients across the UK and with an urban forestry network across the globe. We work with local authorities, NGO’s, community groups, academics and private businesses, to promote good urban forestry management. We collaborate with our partner PlanIT-Geo to support TreePlotter Inventory, TreePlotter Parks, TreePlotter Canopy, and production of 3.30.300 mapping with clients across the UK.

Our work with local authorities and communities involves providing practical and strategic advice, as well as empowering more community engagement and tree planting across the UK. We do this because our collective experience has shown the value of good community engagement in enhancing and improving urban forestry programs. The communities we work with understand the benefits urban forests can bring to the people living and working there.

The projects we undertake are as varied as the customers we support. As a business we are always keen to engage with schools as we think this is the best way to encourage young people to learn and understand more about trees and maybe one day think of joining the sector to make a difference.

We are a small friendly team and our working environment is one of mutual support and encouragement. As an organisation, we value diversity, equality and inclusion, and welcome applications from everyone.
